Lot 776: A Pair of 20th-Century Oak Ladder-Back Side Chairs
A pair of 20th-century side chairs constructed from oak in a provincial style. Each chair features a ladder-back design comprising four horizontal wavy-shaped slats secured between square-section back posts that terminate in out-swept scrolls. The chairs are fitted with padded drop-in seats upholstered in a cream-coloured fabric featuring a repeating interlocking geometric pattern. The frames are raised on square-section legs, with the front legs joined by a decorative wavy-shaped stretcher and the side and rear legs by plain straight stretchers. Visible mortise and tenon joinery is used for the construction of the back slats. No permanent maker’s marks, stamps, or labels are visible on the frames.
Condition report:
Generally good used condition. The oak frames show minor surface abrasions and wear consistent with age and domestic use. The upholstery is intact but shows some very light, faint surface marks.
