Lot 856: A Pair of Edwardian Mahogany and Inlaid Side Chairs
A pair of early 20th-century mahogany side chairs constructed in the Sheraton Revival style. Each chair features a shaped top rail embellished with boxwood stringing and inset corners, positioned above a pierced central splat. The splat is decorated with marquetry inlay depicting a stylised vase and heart motif, flanked by two slender vertical rails. The chairs are fitted with fixed seats upholstered in a pale sage green fabric, finished with a cream-coloured braided gimp border. The frames are raised on square-section tapered front legs and slightly out-swept rear legs, all united by an H-stretcher for additional stability. No maker’s marks, labels, or stamps are visible on the exterior surfaces or legs of the chairs.
Condition report:
The chairs are in used condition, showing signs of age-related wear throughout the timber frames. There is noticeable scuffing, scratching, and thinning of the finish, particularly on the legs and seat rails. The upholstery remains intact with minor surface wear and light soiling consistent with age and use.
