Lot 956: Late Victorian Upholstered X-Frame Gout Rocker
A late Victorian X-frame rocking chair, also identified in contemporary contexts as a gout stool or slipper rocker. The piece is constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, featuring a characteristic X-frame support structure that integrates into curved rockers. The frame terminals are detailed with carved scroll-form motifs. The rectangular seat and backrest are upholstered in a forest-green plush fabric, finished with a border of brass-toned decorative nailhead studs. The construction utilizes through-tenon or bolted joinery to secure the rockers to the primary frame.
Condition report:
The chair is in good overall condition. The wooden frame shows visible surface wear, including scuffs and scratches consistent with age and use, notably along the rockers and frame edges. The upholstery is intact and remains well-secured, with some minor pile wear and surface dust present.
