Lot 958: George III Style Mahogany and Inlaid Slope Front Bureau
A George III style mahogany bureau featuring a slope-front design. The fall-front is decorated with a central oval satinwood marquetry panel depicting a conch shell, bordered by boxwood and ebony stringing. The writing surface opens on two pull-out lopers to reveal a fitted interior containing at least one small drawer and pigeonholes. The lower section comprises three long graduated drawers, each with matching stringing and fitted with brass swan-neck handles on circular backplates. The piece is supported by bracket feet. A brass lock plate on the upper drawer edge is stamped with a crown symbol and the word LEVER. The interior writing surface is plain wood without a leather or baize lining.
Condition report:
The bureau is in a condition consistent with age and use. The mahogany exterior shows visible scratching, scuffing, and fading, particularly to the fall-front. There are minor areas of loss to the stringing and veneer around the edges of the lid. The interior of one drawer contains a significant ink stain. The brass hardware displays a natural aged patina, and one loper handle is slightly misaligned. The structure remains sound.
