Lot 1027: A Late Victorian Hardwood Two-Piece Library Cabinet
A late 19th or early 20th-century library cabinet of two-piece construction, comprising a separate upper section and a lower cupboard base. The piece is constructed from a warm-toned hardwood with softwood secondary timber used for the drawer linings. The upper section is divided into two parts: the left side features a pair of glazed doors with single panes, while the right side has a solid panelled door opening to reveal an interior fitted with two vertical wooden dividers suitable for ledgers or folios. The base section contains a single full-width frieze drawer with a central internal divider, positioned above a two-door cupboard with panelled fronts. The cabinet is fitted with ornate brass bail handles featuring decorative openwork backplates on the drawer and lower doors. The glazed doors are equipped with a brass turn-knob and a small brass escutcheon. Multiple brass keyhole escutcheons are present throughout. No maker’s marks or labels are visible.
Condition report:
The cabinet shows age-related wear, including surface scratches and marks to the finish. There is visible staining to the interior of the frieze drawer. The piece remains in a condition consistent with its age and use.
