Lot 1031: A Framed Japanese Oshie Padded Textile Panel Depicting a Hagoita Paddle and Kabuki Figure
A framed Japanese textile artwork created using the oshie technique, which involves layering padded pieces of silk and other fabrics to create a raised, three-dimensional effect. The central motif features a decorative hagoita paddle, traditionally used in New Year games, embellished with an appliqué portrait of a figure in the style of a Kabuki actor. The figure is depicted in a patterned blue and grey kimono with intricate textile detailing. Positioned below the paddle is a hane shuttlecock. The composition is set against a vibrant, solid red woven textile background. In the lower right corner, there is a small blue square seal containing the white kanji character 光 (Hikari), representing a maker or studio mark. The artwork is likely of mid-20th century origin, dating to the Showa period. The piece is mounted in a dark-stained wooden frame behind glass. The reverse retains a lot tag from Liskeard Auction Rooms (Lot 1031) and a handwritten label identifying the item as a large mounted cloth Japanese face.
