Lot 294: A Pair of Graduated Stoneware Garden Planters with Bamboo Decoration
A pair of graduated stoneware garden planters. These heavy, cylindrical ceramic pots feature slightly flared, flat rims. The exterior is finished in a mottled dark brown glaze, decorated with a large, stylized bamboo leaf and stem motif. This decoration is executed in a contrasting light-cream coloured slip or sgraffito technique. The interiors are finished with a matte, pale buff-coloured slip. The larger pot is designed with two pre-drilled drainage holes in the base. The form and decorative style are consistent with traditional East Asian stoneware water basins, often referred to as Mizubachi. No maker marks or stamps are visible on the exterior or interior of the pieces.
