Lot 508: An Antique 19th Century Polish Jewish Womens Sabbath Cap or Kupka
A heavily decorated headdress, identified through market consensus as a Polish Jewish womens Sabbath cap, known as a Kupka. The cap is constructed on a textile base featuring dense hand-embroidery with gold-coloured metallic couched bullion thread and green and black needlework in chevron and geometric patterns. The surface is extensively embellished with sewn-on white metal alloy ornaments, including a large central triangular filigree plaque and various circular, oval, and teardrop-shaped pendants. These pendants are set with multi-coloured glass cabochons in shades of ruby red, turquoise blue, and amethyst purple. The lower edge is finished with a dense fringe of metal chains, leaf-shaped dangles, and small spherical bells. One circular ornament resembles a worn coin or token with illegible characters. An auction lot tag is attached, reading Liskeard Auction Rooms, Lot 508.
