Lot 516: An Edwardian Sterling Silver Handled Cake Server by Harrison Brothers and Howson, Sheffield 1915
This is a silver-handled cake server, also known as a pie server, featuring a sterling silver filled handle and a stainless steel blade. The handle bears a clear set of English hallmarks. These include the maker’s mark HB in a diamond-shaped punch, attributed to Harrison Brothers and Howson (George Howson). The standard mark of a lion passant indicates sterling silver purity, accompanied by the crown mark for the Sheffield assay office. The gothic letter X corresponds to the year 1915. The stainless steel blade is etched with the text Pie Server, STAINLESS STEEL, and SHEFFIELD ENGLAND. The handle is decorated in an ornate Edwardian style with embossed floral and foliate motifs, including a central six-petalled flower head and acanthus-style scrolls. The blade has a curved tip and a serrated cutting edge on one side.
