Lot 858: A Set of Mediterranean Style Cane-Back Dining Chairs and an Extendable Pedestal Table
A reproduction dining suite in the Mediterranean Provincial style, likely dating from the late 20th century. The set includes a matching group of dining chairs and an extendable pedestal table. The table features a wood-grain finished top with a parquetry-effect border, supported by a substantial central pedestal base terminating in four carved and scrolled legs. The lot includes two additional extension leaves, which are numbered 1 and 2 on their undersides. The chairs, which include at least one armchair (carver) and multiple side chairs, feature high, shaped backs with arched top rails decorated with central carved floral and foliate medallions. Each back is inset with a panel of woven cane. The seats are padded and upholstered in a terracotta-coloured velvet-style fabric. The frames are constructed from a light-toned hardwood with a honey-coloured finish, featuring turned front legs with ring detailing and slightly splayed rear legs. The undersides of the chair frames show commercial joinery with corner blocks. A white printed manufacturer’s mark is present on the underside of the chair frame, consisting of a stylized three-towered castle or crown icon above characters that are not clearly legible.
