Lot 547: A Victorian Silver and Cranberry Glass Sweetmeat / Sugar Basket
This late Victorian sweetmeat or sugar basket comprises a deep cranberry glass liner set within an intricate silver frame. The glass liner is a rich red colour, a hue traditionally achieved using gold chloride in the batch, known as gold ruby glass. It features a smooth, fire-polished rim, consistent with hand-blown manufacture. The silver frame is decorated in an elaborate pierced or ajoure style, depicting small birds perched among dense foliage, grapevines, and four-leaf clover motifs. The frame is fitted with a curved swing handle attached via pivot points. Small, circular hallmarks or maker’s marks are visible on the metalwork, specifically on the central decorative medallions and the pointed base terminal, though these are not clearly legible.
