Lot 788: A Collection of Commemorative Clear Moulded Glass Paperweights and Coasters
A collection of clear moulded glass paperweights and commemorative coasters, primarily featuring British royal and institutional themes from the late 20th century. The pieces are circular in form with intaglio-moulded designs on the reverse, creating a three-dimensional effect. The subjects include various commemorations for HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, including her 80th birthday (1980) and centenary (1900-2000). Other royal themed items include a 1981 commemorative for the Prince of Wales featuring the feathers motif. Institutional pieces comprise the NSPCC centenary (1884-1984), the 200th running of the Derby Stakes (1979) with a portrait of the 12th Earl of Derby, the University College Cardiff centenary (1883-1983), and the University Arms Hotel (1834-1984). One item is moulded in the shape of a multi-petalled floral rose. While the items are in the style of commemorative glass by makers such as Wedgwood or Caithness, no definitive maker marks are visible. A small illegible square sticker is present on the base of the Queen Mother centenary weight and an auction lot sticker is attached to another piece.
