Buyer's Premium:

This lot comprises three pairs of sterling silver sugar tongs of varying dimensions and decorative styles. The largest pair features elaborate bright-cut engraving on the arms, including a central starburst motif and geometric borders, terminating in spoon-shaped bowls. Its design is characteristic of the George III or George IV periods. The medium pair is decorated with a shell motif at the bridge and simple engraved borders on the arms, also terminating in spoon-shaped bowls. The smallest pair features grips cast in the form of bird’s claws. This smaller pair bears a full set of British hallmarks on the interior of the arm, including a maker’s mark with initials starting with J, the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard’s head for the London Assay Office, and a lowercase date letter. The marks indicate a late 19th-century London origin for this piece.
