Lot 168: A Pair of Oriental Style Relief Decorated Glazed Stoneware Planters
A pair of heavy square-section garden planters or jardinières constructed from glazed stoneware. The exterior of each pot is finished in a mottled chocolate-brown glaze, featuring applied buff-coloured relief panels on each face in a traditional Oriental style. Decorative motifs include a bird perched among bamboo-like foliage and a large multi-petalled flower head, possibly a chrysanthemum or peony. The form is square with a slightly flared rim, tapering towards the base which incorporates integral feet. No maker’s marks are visible on the exterior surfaces. The items bear auction lot labels for HCP Auctions South West (Lot 168) and Liskeard Auction Rooms (Lot 175). The planters currently contain a selection of live plants including Mexican fleabane (Erigeron karvinskianus) and grasses, alongside various artificial floral elements.
