Lot 462: A Victorian Mahogany-Cased Set of Drawing Instruments
This set of mathematical drawing instruments dates to the 19th century and is characteristic of professional British drafting tools of the mid-to-late Victorian period. The collection is housed within a rectangular mahogany case featuring an inset brass plaque to the lid and a brass lock. The interior contains a fitted, blue velvet-lined lift-out tray. The instruments are primarily constructed from brass and steel, including several compasses and dividers, some with interchangeable attachments for lead and ink. The set further includes two ruling pens with white handles, a folding parallel rule crafted from brass and a dark wood, possibly ebony, and a boxwood sector rule. This boxwood rule is engraved with multiple mathematical and linear scales, including inch divisions marked IN. Also present is a metal and wood set square with circular perforations. No maker’s name or manufacturer’s marks are visible on the instruments or the casing.
