Lot 614: Two Antique British Two-Tone Stoneware Flagons including a Great Western Railway Example
A pair of antique British two-tone stoneware flagons dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The larger flagon is a heavy-bodied vessel featuring a short tapering neck and a single loop handle at the shoulder. It is finished with a salt-glazed iron-wash brown top and a buff-coloured lower body. The shoulder is incised with the number 2 and bears a bold black-stamped G.W.R. mark, identifying it as property of the Great Western Railway. This piece retains its original stoneware screw-top cap. The second flagon is of a smaller cylindrical form with a tapering neck and rounded shoulder, lacking a handle. It is finished in a two-tone glaze with a dark honey-brown top and a cream-coloured body, retaining a vintage cork stopper. No potter’s marks are visible on either vessel.
Capacity: 2 gallons (large flagon).
