Lot 625: A Pair of Japanese Satsuma Style Moriage Vases, Late Meiji to Taisho Period
A pair of baluster-form pottery vases in the Satsuma style, dating from the late Meiji to early Taisho period. These items are constructed from a cream-coloured earthenware body featuring a characteristic fine network of crackle glaze. The decoration is executed in polychrome enamels with extensive use of the moriage technique, which involves the application of raised, textured enamel dots and lines to create a three-dimensional effect. The primary decoration consists of rectangular panels depicting figures in traditional Japanese attire, including men in formal robes and eboshi hats, set against stylised landscapes. The surrounding body is densely decorated with traditional motifs such as scrolling clouds, geometric bands, and floral patterns in a palette of green, blue, red, and gold. The vases feature flared, scalloped rims and stylised zoomorphic handles at the neck. An auction label from Liskeard Auction Rooms for Lot 625 is present on one vase. No maker marks or signatures are visible on the body or visible portions of the bases.
