Lot 649: A Collection of Commemorative and Heraldic Clear Crystal Intaglio-Etched Paperweights
This lot comprises a collection of clear glass paperweights, primarily of circular disk form, featuring various intaglio-carved or reverse-etched designs. The collection includes several commemorative and heraldic themes executed in high-clarity glass, likely lead crystal. Key pieces include a weight commemorating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription ELIZABETH II 2 JUNE 1953 surrounding a Tudor rose and thistle; a portrait weight inscribed JOHN PAUL II; a heraldic weight featuring a shield with three horizontal bars above a banner inscribed SMITH; and a zodiac weight depicting a lion with the text LEO JULY 23. Also present is a weight depicting a Welsh dragon, a piece with a crowned ER royal cypher, a heart-shaped solid glass weight, and several disks with various decorative patterns and textures. The designs are etched into the base to create a three-dimensional effect when viewed through the top of the glass. One piece bears an auction room sticker for Lot 649.
