Lot 716: A mid-20th century embossed brass-clad wooden fireplace storage box
A mid-20th century rectangular storage box of wooden construction, entirely clad in embossed brass sheeting. This type of box was commonly utilised as a coal scuttle or log box for a fireplace. The exterior features repousse decoration on the lid and sides. The lid depicts a nautical scene with three-masted sailing galleons on a textured sea with a mountainous backdrop, framed by a repeating border of heart-shaped and circular motifs. Similar maritime-themed embossed panels are located on the front and side elevations. The interior is unlined and made of unfinished wood. The lid is secured with two internal butt hinges and includes a safety chain stay. No maker’s marks or signatures are present.
