Lot 834: A 19th Century Pine Vernacular Blanket Chest
A 19th-century vernacular storage chest, constructed throughout from pine. The chest is of simple rectangular form with a hinged lid and is typical of domestic utility furniture from the period. The interior is left in a natural wood finish and includes a side till compartment located on the left-hand side, though the lid for the till is currently absent. The exterior retains an old dark reddish-brown scumble paint finish, which displays significant historical crazing. The lid is secured by two substantial, hand-wrought iron strap hinges mounted to the interior and back of the carcase. A central keyhole is visible on the front face, but the piece is missing its escutcheon plate and key.
