Lot 876: A Late Victorian Carved Hardwood Fireplace Mantel
This architectural salvage item is a large fireplace mantel or surround, constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, possibly walnut, with secondary pine used for the internal structural frame. Dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, the piece is designed in the Late Victorian style. The structure features a wide, projecting top shelf with multi-tiered moulding above a panelled frieze. The central section of the frieze contains a rectangular block decorated with deep relief carvings depicting foliate scrolls. The side jambs are fashioned as fluted pilasters, each surmounted by a large, decoratively carved acanthus leaf corbel. The entire mantel rests on robust, stepped plinth bases. The rear of the piece shows a plainer construction typical of fittings intended to be mounted flush against a chimney breast.
