Lot 877: A Pair of Provincial Smoker's Bow Armchairs
A pair of wooden provincial armchairs of smoker’s bow or captain’s chair design. Each chair is constructed with a continuous steam-bent back rail terminating in out-swept armrests. The back features a central pierced scroll splat flanked by turned spindles. The solid, saddle-shaped seats are supported by four turned legs with a H-shaped turned stretcher. The construction is characteristic of British vernacular furniture, likely utilising beech for the spindles and legs with elm for the seats. No maker’s marks or manufacturer stamps are visible.
