Lot 925: A 19th-century carved oak armchair in the late 17th-century Baroque style
This armchair is a 19th-century revival of the grand fauteuil style popular during the late Stuart and Louis XIV periods. The piece is constructed from carved oak and features a high rectangular back upholstered in green velvet, contrasting with a seat upholstered in a floral tapestry fabric. The upholstery is finished with brass-headed nailhead trim. The frame is elaborately carved throughout, with downward-sweeping arms featuring acanthus leaf detailing that terminates in scrolls. The front legs are joined by a deeply carved, pierced stretcher featuring scrolling foliate and acanthus motifs. The legs terminate in well-defined lion’s paw feet set below square blocks carved with rosettes.
