Lot 597: Cassell's Illustrated Family Bible. Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, [c.1865].
A large-format Victorian family Bible, published by Cassell, Petter, and Galpin of London and New York. The volume is bound in heavy black leather or leather-grained cloth, featuring deep-embossed decorative borders and a prominent gilt-stamped motif of a chalice or cup to the front board. The spine is decorated with gilt-tooled compartments. All page edges are gilt with a decorative gauffered or textured finish. Internally, the work is profusely illustrated with wood engravings, including full-page plates and in-text illustrations. Captions include Sycamore Tree and David in solemn assembly declaring God’s favour to himself and promise to his son Solomon. The New Testament title page is present, with text stating The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Two modern auction stickers numbered 1080 are applied to the front cover, and a lot tag from HCP Auctions South West is attached to the fore-edge.
