Lot 287: A Large Hand-Woven Natural Fibre Market Tote or Utility Basket
A large-scale utility or market basket constructed from hand-woven natural plant fibres, likely seagrass or straw. The item features a coarse, open-weave plaited pattern throughout the body. Two integrated loop handles are woven into the upper rim of the vessel. The construction is flexible and shows characteristic variations in the natural material. There are no visible maker’s marks or stamps; a small white rectangular adhesive label is affixed to the exterior, and a larger yellow and white tag is attached to one handle.
Condition report:
The basket is in fair used condition with significant signs of age and wear. There is noticeable dark discolouration and staining to sections of the fibre. A portion of the handle or rim shows structural damage where the material has detached and has been subsequently secured with white adhesive tape and paper. General fraying and minor losses to the weave are present throughout.
