Lot 402: A Japanese Moriage Dragonware Cup and Saucer
A Japanese porcelain teacup and matching saucer set featuring traditional dragonware decoration. The pieces are finished with hand-applied moriage, a raised slip technique, depicting a coiled dragon in relief with white and grey tones and blue-jewelled eyes. The decoration is set against a smokey matte-finish ground that graduates from black at the rims to grey and white highlights, accented by blue clouds. Both the footed cup and the saucer are finished with gilded rims and a gilded C-scroll handle. The underside of the cup features a gold-tone backstamp consisting of a triangle enclosing a stylized character, positioned beside the text MADE IN JAPAN.
Condition report:
The set appears to be in good condition. There are no visible chips, cracks, or signs of restoration. The moriage slip remains intact. There is some light, age-appropriate wear to the gilding on the rims.
