Lot 920: S. Francis Smitheman and Others, An Assortment of Framed Prints
An assortment of framed prints, featuring a maritime colour print after an original work by S. Francis Smitheman. This print is titled The Steamship The Great Britain arriving at South Street, New York, on 10th August, 1845 on her maiden voyage. It is a photomechanical reproduction with a printed signature Smitheman in the lower right corner of the image. The lower margin contains a printed descriptive caption and a copyright credit for the s.s. Great Britain Project. The scene depicts the large historic steamship at a populous New York wharf with figures, horse-drawn carts, and smaller sailing vessels. It is housed in a glazed wooden frame with a gilt inner slip and a cream-coloured mount. The lot also includes a modern textured print depicting two wooden dwellings on stilts above a shoreline with figures, presented in a silver-toned frame with a large mount. Several other framed prints are included in the assortment.
