Lot 926: Late Victorian or Edwardian Oak Mirrored Back Sideboard in the Art Nouveau Style
This is a late Victorian or early Edwardian mirrored-back sideboard, circa 1890–1910, constructed from oak with quarter-sawn sections displaying characteristic ray fleck grain. The superstructure features a large, shaped, bevel-edged mirror set within an oak frame, topped by a moulded cornice with decorative corbels. The mirror is flanked by two small display shelves supported by brackets. The base section includes two central bow-fronted drawers positioned above a double-door cupboard, which are flanked by two full-height cupboard doors. The outer cupboard doors are ornamented with recessed oval panels featuring high-relief carvings of stylised foliate scrolls and fleur-de-lis motifs in the Art Nouveau taste. The piece is fitted with ornate cast brass-coloured metal handles on rectangular backplates with scrolled designs and matching lock escutcheons. The interior of the left-hand cupboard is fitted with a vertical divider and includes a specialized internal cellarette drawer with an inset brass flush-pull handle. No maker marks, stamps, or labels are clearly visible.
