Lot 438: A Pair of West German Style Salt-Glazed Stoneware Lidded Jars
A pair of salt-glazed stoneware storage jars, consisting of one Rumtopf jar and one Punch Bowl jar. These items feature a bulbous form with small lug handles at the shoulders and matching domed lids topped with spherical cobalt blue knobs. The jars are decorated in a traditional Westerwald style with a light grey salt glaze and relief-molded patterns. The central bands contain the inscriptions RUMTOPF and PUNCH BOWL in raised letters, surrounded by fruit motifs including clusters of grapes and pears picked out in brown glaze. Cobalt blue scrollwork and undulating borders frame the decorative elements. The lids are similarly decorated with relief-molded scrolls and cobalt blue highlights. The Punch Bowl jar retains a modern paper auction label for HCP Auctions South West, Lot 438, and a handwritten label numbered 937. No factory marks or maker’s stamps are visible on the exterior surfaces.
