Lot 487: A Very Rare Beatrix Potter ceramic figurine of Mr. Badger from Beswick
A glazed ceramic figurine depicting the anthropomorphic character Mr. Badger from the Beatrix Potter stories. This particular figure has had the top of the walking stick removed prior to the glazing process and, as such, is only one of a very few. Others of this ilk are fetching many hundreds more than their “complete” counterparts. The figure is modelled in a walking pose, carrying a large brown sack over his left shoulder. He is attired in a dark blue tailcoat over a pale yellow waistcoat featuring three hand-painted brown buttons. The figurine stands on a circular base with green mottled decoration and a brown painted swirl flourish to the upper surface. The style and execution are highly characteristic of the Beatrix Potter range produced by Beswick or Royal Albert, although no factory marks are visible to the upper surfaces. A white adhesive lot label for HCP Auctions South West reading Lot 487 is attached to the reverse of the figure.
Condition report:
The figurine displays fine, age-related crazing to the glaze, which is most prominent on the yellow areas of the waistcoat and lower body. There are no chips, cracks, or visible signs of professional repair.
