Lot 106: A Pair of Vintage Industrial Forged Iron Hand Tools comprising a Pick-Mattock and Sledgehammer
This lot consists of two mid-20th-century heavy-duty hand tools, typical of British industrial or agricultural use. The first tool is a pick-mattock featuring a forged iron head with a dual-purpose design, including one pointed pick end and one flat chisel or mattock end, fitted to a traditional tapered wooden handle. The second tool is a sledgehammer with a heavy, rectangular double-faced forged iron head, a pattern frequently used as a railroad spike driver, mounted on a wooden handle. The handles are likely constructed from ash or hickory. On the wooden handle of the pick-mattock, there are faint, impressed characters located below an auction label; these include the digits 1, 9, and 6 followed by a partially legible character, which may indicate a manufacture date or a military-style broad arrow mark. There are no clear maker’s marks visible on the rusted metal surfaces.
