Lot 666: A Collection of Vintage Interlocking Brass Marking Stencils and a Lithographed Tin Box
An oil on canvas portrait of a lady, presented head and shoulders within a feigned oval. The sitter is depicted with dark, voluminous hair, wearing an ochre or orange bodice with a white lace-edged chemise and a blue fabric accent on the sleeve. The work is executed in a style characteristic of the late Stuart or early Georgian period, following the tradition of court portraitists such as Sir Peter Lely or Sir Godfrey Kneller. The canvas is mounted on a traditional wooden stretcher with a central vertical crossbar. The verso features an inscription in black ink on the central bar reading 1327 and a small, heavily worn rectangular paper label on the right vertical bar with illegible characters. The painting is housed in an ornate, heavily carved gilt wood and composition frame decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves, pierced corners, and shell motifs. No signature is visible on the front or reverse of the work.
