Lot 233: An Assortment of Garden Hand Tools and Accessories including Yeoman and Sparko Examples
A vintage Black & Decker Workmate portable folding workbench and vise, an early production model featuring a cast alloy H-frame. The frame is finished in blue paint and has the manufacturer name Black & Decker and model name Workmate cast into the horizontal structural members. The work surface is comprised of a two-piece adjustable wooden top with a reddish-brown finish, designed with a grid of holes for bench dogs. The structure includes folding blue-painted legs fitted with black plastic feet. Two black plastic winding handles are positioned at the front to operate the integrated vise mechanism. Several black plastic bench dogs are currently fitted to the worktop. This blue-frame design is a recognized example of late 20th-century British industrial design, originally developed by Ron Hickman.
