Lot 241: A Pair of Green Synthetic Folding Camping Equipment Carry Bags
This lot comprises two vintage 2-gallon fuel cans of a type commonly used in the United Kingdom during the early-to-mid 20th century. Both cans are constructed from tin-plated steel and retain their original brass screw caps.
The first can is a Shell-Mex Limited example, finished in red with yellow hand-painted stencilled lettering reading SHELL MOTOR SPIRIT. The top surface features an embossed Shell pecten logo painted in yellow. One side of the handle is embossed with PETROLEUM SPIRIT HIGHLY INFLAMMABLE, while the other side is embossed with SHELL MEX LIMITED KINGSWAY W.C.2. A hand-painted yellow 3/- price mark is located on the shoulder. The brass cap is embossed with SHELL.
The second can is a British Petroleum (BP) example, overpainted in a blue finish. The side features a silver stencil reading BENTALL CORN MILL, referring to the Essex-based agricultural machinery manufacturer. The brass cap is embossed with the letters B P.
