Lot 914: A Pair of Contemporary Wing-Back Upholstered Dining Chairs
A 19th-century utilitarian coffer or chest of rectangular form, constructed from heavy timber planks. The lid is secured by two large, elongated wrought iron strap hinges with rounded terminals. The exterior timber shows evidence of a dark stained or possibly black painted finish, now extensively weathered and worn. The interior is undivided, showing the natural grain of the wood and the remains of a metal hasp mechanism fixed to the front interior. The construction is characteristic of primitive domestic storage trunks. A modern auction lot label numbered 918 is affixed to the lid.
