Lot 1156: Julis (20th Century), Sunset Harbour Scene with Coastal Town, oil on canvas, dated '74
An oil painting on board by J. & J. Simmonds, depicting the flint-faced architecture of St Mark’s Church in Purley, London. The composition illustrates the church from a street-level perspective, highlighting its distinctive octagonal lantern tower with horizontal louvres and a lead-covered spire. The building features red-tiled roofs and a large Gothic-style window on the western gable. In the foreground, a low flint boundary wall is visible, punctuated by a decorative wrought-iron archway over a garden gate. The church is flanked by mature trees, including a weeping willow and a coniferous cedar to the right. The work is executed in a descriptive, representational style typical of late 20th-century topographical painting. It is signed J. & J. Simmonds in the lower right corner and dated Sept. 1988 in the lower left. The painting is housed in a modern gilt-fronted wooden frame with a red inner fillet.
40cm x 50cm (approximate including frame).
