Lot 92: Vintage Taxidermy Purple Emperor Butterfly Specimen in Glass Brandy Snifter Display Case
A taxidermy specimen of a male Purple Emperor butterfly (Apatura iris). The butterfly is mounted with wings spread in a dorsal position, displaying dark chocolate-brown upper wing surfaces with white and cream spots, a white band across the hindwings, and a characteristic iridescent purple-blue sheen visible at certain angles. The specimen is presented within a large clear glass vessel of brandy snifter form, featuring an interior arrangement of artificial flowers, including a red silk rose and smaller white blossoms, resting on a base of white downy feathers. The display is topped with a dark, turned hardwood lid that is sealed to the glass rim with a visible layer of yellowed adhesive. This item is characteristic of decorative entomological displays produced during the mid-to-late 20th century.
