Lot 113: Three Antique and Vintage Cigarette and Vesta Cases including a George V Sterling Silver Example
This lot comprises three metal cases of varying construction and materials.
The first item is a George V sterling silver cigarette case of rectangular form with rounded corners. The exterior features engine-turned decoration consisting of horizontal lines and a central circular cartouche engraved with the initials V.K.G. The interior has a gilt wash finish and retains two yellow elasticated bands. The interior rim is struck with hallmarks for the maker Samuel M. Levi Ltd (S.M.L in a rectangular punch), the Birmingham Assay Office (anchor), the Lion Passant (.925 sterling mark), and the date letter s for 1917.
The second item is a rectangular cigarette case with engine-turned decoration featuring concentric circles radiating from the centre. The interior has a brass-toned finish and a hinged internal divider. The divider is stamped with PAT. NO 207369 and REGD. NO 694143. No sterling silver hallmarks are present, indicating a base metal or plated construction.
The third item is a small vesta case or match safe with a hinged lid and a striker plate to the base. The exterior is engraved with foliate scrollwork and features a central shield-shaped cartouche engraved with the initials V.S.B.C. The interior of the lid is stamped with a star symbol followed by the letters EPNS, denoting electro-plated nickel silver.
