Lot 142: Two Hallmarked Antique Silver Mounted Cut Glass Vessels including a Mappin & Webb Sterling Silver Vanity Jar
This lot comprises two early 20th-century cut glass vessels with silver mounts. The first is a vanity or dressing table jar with a clear glass body featuring vertical fluting and a diamond-cut base. The vessel is fitted with a sterling silver pull-off lid decorated in high relief with a repoussé design of five winged cherub heads, a motif based on the Angels Heads by Sir Joshua Reynolds. The side of the lid collar is struck with British hallmarks including the anchor for Birmingham, the lion passant for sterling silver, the date letter e for 1904, and the maker mark MAPPIN & WEBB LTD. The second item is a cut glass shaker or muffineer with a body decorated with deeply cut diamond and starburst patterns. It is topped with a silver lid featuring star-shaped piercings and a decorative finial. The lower rim of the lid is stamped with a rectangular punch containing the digits 800, indicating continental silver purity, alongside a smaller illegible oval mark.
