Lot 172: An Edwardian Sterling Silver and Continental Silver Owl Novelty Napkin Ring, Davis & Buckley, 1910
An Edwardian silver novelty napkin ring of cylindrical form, manufactured by Davis & Buckley. The band is decorated with engine-turned horizontal ribbing and bears a full set of British hallmarks for Birmingham, 1910, including the maker mark D&B and the lion passant for sterling silver. Mounted to the exterior is a cast continental silver owl figure, depicted in a standing pose with chased plumage and set with two blue glass cabochon eyes. The reverse of the owl figure is struck with the German registration mark GES. GESCH. and the fineness mark 800 for continental silver. Small, partially worn repeats of the British hallmarks are visible on the owl’s tail, likely struck at the time of assembly or assay. The piece is a representative example of composite novelty silverware from the early 20th century.
