Lot 177: A Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Backed Grooming Brushes
A pair of late Victorian sterling silver-backed grooming brushes, comprising one oval clothes brush and one handled hair brush. Both pieces are decorated in the Victorian Rococo style with elaborate repoussé work featuring scrolling foliage, floral motifs, and central vacant oval cartouches. The oval clothes brush is stamped with hallmarks for Birmingham, 1897, with the maker’s mark HB for Henry Bourne, the lion passant for sterling silver, and the date letter X. It also features the UK Design Registration number RD 192281. The handled brush is stamped with hallmarks for Birmingham, with the maker’s mark L&S for Levi & Salaman, the lion passant for sterling silver, and an illegible date letter. Both brushes feature natural bristles set into wooden cores within the silver casings.
