This lot comprises two vintage two-gallon metal containers of the type traditionally used for motor spirit and lubricating oil in the United Kingdom. The first item is a petrol can finished in yellow with red and black lettering for Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd. The front face is stencilled with the text Motor Shell Mex Spirit, featuring the distinctive enlarged M and X in red and vertical Shell branding. A hand-painted historical price of 3/- is visible on the shoulder. It is fitted with a brass screw cap featuring a cross-bar grip. The second item is a lubricating oil can finished in black, featuring a cream and red scroll logo for The Blackstone Oil Engine Lubricating Oil, associated with Blackstone and Co. Ltd of Stamford. The side is stencilled with Bearing Grade 40. Both cans are of tin-plate steel construction with fixed carry handles. One can carries a third-party auction lot sticker from HCP Auctions South West and a blue tag numbered 13. These items appear to have been restored or repainted for decorative display.
