Lot 160: Two Vintage Two-Gallon G.P.O. and Shell-Mex and BP Ltd Petrol Cans
This lot consists of two two-gallon fuel cans, representative of mid-20th century British automobilia. The first can is finished in red and features hand-painted yellow lettering for the General Post Office (G.P.O.) on the front and top surfaces. The second can is finished in blue and represents Shell-Mex and BP Ltd, a joint marketing venture in the United Kingdom that operated between 1932 and 1975. This can displays hand-painted red and green lettering on the front face, with abbreviated red lettering on the side. Both items are constructed from steel with integrated top carry handles and brass filler caps. The cans exhibit characteristics of later refurbishment, with modern paint and hand-applied graphics. The red G.P.O. can retains a blue auction sticker numbered 13 and a white tag for lot 160.
