This lot features two vintage British two-gallon petrol cans, commonly referred to as motor spirit cans, dating from the early 20th century, approximately the 1920s to 1930s. These metal containers were the standard vessel for fuel distribution in the United Kingdom prior to the prevalence of roadside petrol pumps. The first can is a Pratt’s High Test petrol can, produced for the Anglo-American Oil Co. Ltd. It retains remnants of a green paint finish and features a printed circular logo on the front face displaying the brand name Pratts in cursive script above the block lettering HIGH TEST. The second can is a Cory’s Motor Spirit can, produced by Cory Brothers and Co. Ltd. This example features three rows of embossed capital lettering reading CORYS, MOTOR, and SPIRIT. It is fitted with a brass collar and a period-correct brass screw cap. Both cans are equipped with integrated metal carry handles.
