Lot 559: A Collection of Hand-Painted Folk Art Elephant Figurines and a Trinket Box
A collection of hand-painted wood and composite elephant figurines, primarily in the style of Indian and Mexican folk art. The group includes a lidded trinket box hand-painted in orange, yellow, and red with intricate geometric and floral bands, featuring a hollowed-out red interior. Several standing elephants are included, featuring stylized floral patterns, circular motifs, and white dot-work accents characteristic of Rajasthani wood carvings. One smaller figurine displays bright, abstract motifs including a sunburst and colourful swirls, resembling the Oaxacan alebrije tradition. Additionally, the collection contains a dark, textured elephant figure made of a composite material, featuring high-relief floral head ornamentation and inset gold-toned accents. Most items are constructed from carved and hand-painted wood. No maker marks are visible.
