Lot 595: A Trio of Assorted Collectables Comprising a Framed Caricature, an English Pottery Widdicombe Fair Mug, and a German Lidded Beer Stein
A trio of decorative items including a framed caricature, a relief-decorated ceramic mug, and a lidded beer stein. The framed item is a pen and ink drawing or print depicting a soldier in a peaked cap and uniform, carrying a rifle with a bird perched on the barrel, accompanied by a skeletal dog and a rabbit in a landscape setting. The ceramic mug is relief-moulded with a scene depicting a group of men riding a single horse, inspired by the folk song Widdicombe Fair. The rim is inscribed WIDDICOMBE FAIR and the lower border lists the characters JAN STEWER, PETER GURNEY, and OLD UNCLE TOM COBLEIGH AN ALL. The lidded beer stein features a relief-moulded depiction of a castle set against a dark cobalt blue ground, with the word Heidelberg inscribed above. It is finished with ornate foliate and scroll-work borders and a hinged pewter lid with a decorative thumb lift.
