Buyer's Premium:

This Victorian blue and white transfer-printed earthenware platter was produced by Edward Challinor of Fenton, Staffordshire, active circa 1842 to 1867. The piece features the Chinese Azure pattern, which is stylistically related to the Chinese Marine series popularized by Thomas Minton between 1825 and 1836. The oval platter has a scalloped, moulded rim and a central Chinoiserie scene depicting a multi-tiered pagoda, riverside dwellings, and various boats under a large willow tree. This central landscape is enclosed by a dense border of floral sprays and scrolling foliage. The underside of the platter bears a blue transfer-printed cartouche containing the pattern name Chinese Azure and the word OPAL, with the word CHINA printed to the side. There are also impressed marks on the base consisting of the numeral 11 and a chevron symbol.
