Lot 933: Mid-20th Century Carved Hardwood Fall-Front Bureau in the Chinoiserie Style
This fall-front bureau is constructed from a solid tropical hardwood, likely camphor wood or teak, featuring extensive relief carving across the exterior. The drop-down writing surface displays a detailed landscape scene with pagodas, figures, bridges, and floral motifs. The side panels and drawer front are similarly decorated with carved patterns. The desk is supported by cabriole legs ending in ball-and-claw feet, showcasing a fusion of Western form and Eastern decorative motifs. The fall-front opens to a fitted interior consisting of several horizontal and vertical pigeonhole compartments. One small internal drawer with a heart-shaped finger-pull is present, while a second compartment indicates a missing drawer. Metal hinges and support stays are fitted to the interior, and a central lock is positioned on the fall-front. A white lot sticker numbered 933 is adhered to the top surface.
