Lot 960: S. Francis Stephens, 'The steamship The Great Britain arriving at South Street, New York', Framed Print
A colour offset lithograph after an original work by S. Francis Stephens (A.T.D., B.A., F.R.S.A.). The print depicts the historical steamship SS Great Britain on its maiden voyage arriving at South Street, New York, on 10th August 1845. The scene is a detailed marine composition showing the ship at dockside surrounded by contemporary 19th-century activity, including figures in period dress, horse-drawn wagons, and stacked cargo barrels. The work bears a printed signature ‘S. Francis Stephens’ in the lower right of the image. The lower margin contains printed text stating the title of the work and the artist’s name and academic credentials. A copyright notice for the ‘© s.s. Great Britain Project’ is located in the lower right margin. The print is presented within a cream-coloured mount and housed in a dark wooden frame featuring a gold-coloured inner fillet.
