Lot 111: A Set of Six Copeland Spode Rhine Pattern Blue and White Transferware Plates
A set of six circular earthenware plates featuring scalloped rims and underglaze blue transfer-printed decoration. Each plate is decorated with the ‘Rhine’ pattern, depicting a romanticised landscape featuring a large castle or château situated on a riverbank with mountains in the background and a figure in a rowing boat in the mid-ground. The central vignette is framed by an ornate border composed of large floral blooms, scrolls, and foliate motifs. The undersides bear factory marks in underglaze blue, featuring the word SPODE within a rectangular frame, surmounted by COPELAND and with ENGLAND below. The pattern name RHINE is printed to the right of the factory mark above a solitary numeral 2. There are further green printed and impressed marks present, including the characters D 25.
